Interior Decorating - How to pick Furniture For Small Spaces
True or false: "I have a small room, so I need small furniture."
Answer: False.
I call this "dollhouse syndrome." The truth is that, while you do want your furniture to be Proportionate, it does not need to be small, per se. You see, your brain plays thoughprovoking tricks on you when it comes to proportions. If you have a small room, and you fill it with small pieces, your brain says, "Look at these dinky things... I must be in a very small space." On the contrary, when you put one or two larger pieces in a small room, now your brain says, "Well! Look at the large pieces we have here! I must be in a large space!"
Dollhouse Families
Bear in mind that the larger your pieces are, the fewer you will have. No matter what Actual size the room is, you need to articulate free walk ways, and enough breathing room that your furnishings are not on top of each other.
Living rooms are a great example of this principle. Most homes today have a "formal" living room at the front of the house, and the family room towards the back. (Occasionally I see these two rooms joined together... An unfortunate architectural option I will never understand, but I digress.) More often than not, I see the poor, alienated formal living room filled with a tiny Chippendale sofa and maybe a loveseat, two tiny wing chairs, several under-scaled tables, dinky lamps, a small upright piano, and some very dated art pieces - maybe chosen by someone's aging auntie. Ugh! And the homeowners are frustrated that no one is using the space... Go figure!!
First of all, think how many citizen you would ever realistically envision sitting in this room at the same time. This is not the early 20th century, when many friends might derive for afternoon tea. If you have a room maybe 12 x 15, you're only putting 4-6 citizen in there before it feels like a sardine can... So what on earth do you need all those pieces for?
Next, outline out what you want to Do in your small space, and get only as many pieces as nothing else but necessary. Want to be able to cozy up with a book while husband watches the game or your teenagers evict you from the family room? Get a comfy sofa that's deep enough to curl up in or stretch out on (maybe even nap!), and a great club chair with an ottoman. Anchor them with a 6x9 or 8x10 area rug, get a coffee table that's big enough that you don't have to stretch tooooo far to set your coffee down, one or two good-size end tables and lamps, and voila! C'est finis!
Amazingly, whether it's a living room or any other room of your home, when you buy pieces that are comfortable, rather than thinking "small small small small small," it's quite likely you will nothing else but find yourself using the quadrilateral footage you paid for, and the room will look far more thoughprovoking and thoughprovoking to boot.
Are there limits to what is acceptable? Of course. In the living room of our example, I probably do not want to encounter a pit sectional and wall-unit entertainment center. Use some rational judgment, but don't fear pieces that have some size to them!

Clever Room Arrangements
How often have you sat in your living room or house room and wondered if there was anything that you can do to make it into a more lively space? It seems to lack personality, charm, or coziness? The furniture placement is boring and just plainly does not work? No one wants to be in that room.
Clever room arrangements can transform a conventional room into something new and different. It can unquestionably shape the space and make it visually more stimulating and conducive to great conversation and warm house gatherings.
Dollhouse Families
Here are some tips to make your room come alive:
1. First, find the focal point in the room. The cornerstone of every arrangement is a focal point. It may be the view, a fireplace, a wall of built-ins, or an armoire.
If there is no focal point, generate one. Hang a painting on a wall or make a picturescape out of some pictures. You can use a large breakfront, etagere, or even a television set. You can generate it with a beautiful area rug on the floor. The focal point in a room is essential.
2. Determine the traffic flow in the room. people cutting in front of a sofa while you are trying to chat is a no-no. Make sure that electrical cords are not in the "walkways". Keep this in mind when planning the arrangement of furniture.
3. Measure the room and then draw it out on a 1/4 inch grid. Remember to consist of doorways, windows, built-ins, and any other features that would interfere with arranging the furniture.
4. Make cutouts for your furniture pieces once you have measured those.
5. Play with your cutouts on the drawn floorplan until you get a pleasing arrangement. Remember that it is easier to do this first than shifting furniture around from one end of the room to the other. Keep the focal point in mind as you "play".
6. Place the furnishings so that the focal point is where your eyes should plainly and conveniently be looking. Place the larger seating pieces first as these will be the boldest and most room-shaping articles.
7. Move furniture away from walls to get away from that "waiting-room" look.
8.. Think about placing the furniture on angles if the space in your room allows it. perhaps making a "V" in front of the fireplace would be exciting. Maybe angling the sofa on a 45 degree angle in the corner would be a great place to start your grouping. Doing so emphasizes the width of a long narrow room.
9. Remember to dispose the furniture to encourage conversation. Make sure that seats are no more than 8 feet apart. Farther than that will ensue in a need to shout to one an additional one to be heard. Naturally, the seats should face one an additional one for eye contact. Of course, if you want to be anti-social, you can place the seats back to back!
10. Add the smaller or occasional pieces to compliment the larger furniture. consist of a mix of larger and smaller pieces. remove non-essential furnishings to generate space. Make sure that some of the pieces are mobile. You can also add furniture (if your room is large enough) to divide a room into action areas. Breaking a room into two or more groupings can help make it function better.
11. Don't forget about the size and scale of pieces in your room. Lots of small scale pieces in a large room will make the furniture seem microscopic and you will feel like you are in a dollhouse.
12. Every seat requires a table within comfortable reach. Coffee tables should be about 18 inches in front of the seating. End tables should be no more than 6 inches away from the arms of a seat.
13. Don't forget about lighting. Add the three types of lighting into your scheme; ambient or general lighting, task lighting (for reading and other tasks) and accent (candles, uplights, spotlights) lighting. Only the aggregate of all three will make the room feel and function properly.
14. Now you can decorate. Remember to keep the focus on the focal point. Accessorize in "odd" numbers as it is most pleasing to the eye. Make sure that you vary the height in the room to keep it from looking stale and to keep the eye moving. generate a triangle placement with your plants and task lights throughout the room.
15. Think about breaking the rules. Use space creatively. Maybe swapping the dining room and living room spaces makes great sense. Maybe the dining room is a great area for a cozier living room seating arrangement. Just think how cozy it would be eating by a fireplace if you made you living room into a dining room!
Remember, make this a fun project. This is not something you should fear if approached with the right attitude. Be practical, be realistic, be flexible, and most of all...you can forget about perfection, break some rules and think covering the box!
